Inspirations

Greetings from me! (Fitz) I am 1/2 of the percussionists and artistic director of FLYDLPHN.

I am always having a blast working with this group and am extraordinarily excited with all of the work we have been putting into our next collaborations and projects!

I don’t consider myself a terrific writer so today I wanted to keep it light and ramble a bit about some recent inspirations.

I have many disparate interests and this often means I’m taking inspiration from disparate art and applying it to disparate projects. But one of my favorite parts of creating in general is that you get to express any interests you have through a chosen lens regardless of where the motivation comes from. As a composer, I take a very long time to write. By the time I get to the end of a piece it is likely that I’ve made several stops and various deep dives that all find some influence in the final versions of my music.

And for this reason, I thought I’d share some of what has inspired me and my writing recently - and more interestingly to offer a prompt to anyone who creates slowly or creates at all. That is to seek influence from contrasting work/work you might not normally admire often. There are so many more versions of yourself and your art waiting to be discovered and that’s cool!

Dorian Concept’s 1min videos on their Roland SH-101 which are such gems. They feel like bites of synth candy.

"Celui qui tombe" by Yoann Bourgeois is choreography that I barely wrap my head around but gives me so many good feelings.

Robert Wilson reading 5 poems by Christopher Knowles. Simply lovely language.

RLLRLRLLRRLRLRLRLLRLRLR by Julian Sartorius. The particular intersection of percussion minimalism and simple humor that this exists in scritches my brain in the right way.

Robert Nettleship is one of my favorites composers. Their work will always digs deep into sound and animation I had no idea was possible.
