PCAP works with incarcerated people, offering them the opportunity to express themselves through the arts, and each composer on the concert chose an artwork created by a PCAP participant on which to base a piece of music. As a big fan of science fiction, I was immediately struck by Nathan Morrice's painting of a beautiful watery landscape with a ringed planet visible in the pale sky behind the mountains. It could be the setting for any number of fantastical stories, and immediately made me feel as if I had something in common with the artist. I imagine the planet in the painting as the destination, and my music as the journey to it. Riding in a little silver spaceship through the starscape, we hear the steady rhythm of the spaceship engine, the twinkling of the stars, and the anxiety that comes from being all alone in the void of space. The crew of the spaceship experiences a few ups and downs, including a loss of gravity, but in the end, they arrive safely on a new world beyond their wildest dreams. This piece will be included on FLYDLPHN's debut album, to be released in 2027. -Nora Bio: Nora Farley is a composer whose music explores the sacredness of the Earth from many angles, delving into themes of environmentalism, natural history, and spirituality. An avid choral singer and poet, Nora writes modally informed, melodically driven music for all types of vocal and instrumental ensembles, often using her own texts. She holds a B.A. in vocal performance and comparative languages and linguistics from Earlham College, and an M.M. in composition from the University of Michigan, and is currently pursuing a D.M.A. at the University of Georgia Athens. Her teachers include Sarah Miller, Roshanne Etezady, Erik Santos, Evan Chambers, and Emily Koh. In addition to composition, she organizes and leads Pagan community singing events in Ann Arbor Michigan with her ukulele. More soon! Bio: Emily Graham is a composer based in the DC metro area with a love for all things classical, pop, rock, and electronic. Graham received her Bachelor's degree in Composition from Syracuse University, and her Master's degree in Composition from the University of Michigan. Her portfolio includes works for voice, solo instruments, chamber ensembles, and large ensembles, and several short film scores. Graham seeks to break down the barriers between acoustic, electronic, and visual media composition. As a composer, Graham's main passion is to create evocative conceptual and programmatic music. Her friends and colleagues have called her music expressive, unique, and melodically-driven, and have compared her music to the likes of Howard Shore. Graham seeks to create a career writing both concert and film music - she is always working to further expand her knowledge of both modern music and music history in order to emulate and experiment with different styles and genres. Most notably, Graham's Trombone Concerto titled "The Titanomachy" had its world premiere at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in 2022. This piece exists within a timespan of .2 seconds, following the reverse trajectory of a lighting bolt, starting from the roots of a tree all the way up to the top of a cloud. Apple Tree Split in Three was Written for the 2026 Prison Creative Arts Project New Art//New Music Initiative, created in collaboration with artist Shane and his artwork, Thunderstorm. Thunderstorm is an account of a memory from his childhood, seeing his grand father's tree split in half during a thunderstorm. Many years later, when he sat down to draw after not drawing for a long time, this memory instantly came to him as inspiration. The artwork was created through pencil and erasure, creating bright, buzzing, and electric lighting through the contrast of bright erased lines next to thick, dark, graphite haze. The score for Apple Tree Split in Three follows this approach by covering collaged sheet music with graphite and using erasure to create lines and imagery that reveal cells and notation for the musicians to follow. The sheet music college consists of famous examples of “Sturm and Drang” (Storm and Stress) within the classical period. Sturm and Drang is an aesthetic that features dark and stormy atmospheres, something I thought felt fitting for this landscape. This music is contrasted with a “childhood theme,” an original tune sneaks in and out throughout the duration of the work. Throughout the score, there are also hidden gestures and notation hidden in dark shadows of graphite for performers to uncover over time. -Charlie Bio: Charlie Kreidler [pronounced cried-ler] is a composer whose music can be described as whimsical with a tuneful amount of the grotesque. Charlie's process can also be described as "crafty," utilizing motions of cutting, pasting, stamping, negative space, and found sound/object; often shuffling and assembling small fragments to unveil a greater whole. Recent projects include a work for brass quintet entitled, now I know, that explores memory in concert. The piece consists of 26 micromovents, each for a letter of the alphabet. Once all 2 movements are played consecutively, the quintet plays a secret word by jumbling up a collection of letters. It is up to the audience to remember the sonic character of each micromovement to uncover the secret word. Other projects include a commission from NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) and Cincinnati Song Initiative to compose a new art song set to text by University of Michigan poet Edgar Morales. Entitled [ ] is a parrot, the new work translates negative space within erasure poetry to the physical musical score, dropping Morales' poetry, consisting of fragmented memories of fireworks, snowfall, graves, and wolf spiders, into brief and hazy interludes of Schubert's Winterreise. In 2026, Charlie received the Brehm Prize in Instrumental Composition from the University of Michigan for his piece, Palindrome Through Polka Dot, for saxophone quartet. Charlie holds degrees from Triton College (AA), Mannes School of Music (BM), and currently studies at the University of Michigan School of Music Theatre and Dance (MM). Meaningful mentors in his education include (in no particular order), composer Salvatore Siriano, composer and saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom, actor Joe Grifasi, and composers David T. Little and Michael Daugherty. In many ways, forests are monotonous, but in a maximalist manner. The first half of the piece depicts this monotony, a portrait of overwhelming similarities with beautiful and breathtaking individuated events. This monotony accelerates in intensity as the piece heads toward dusk, reflecting wildlife's propensity to become more vocal through the latter part of the evening hours. Immediately following is a pensive second half. Dusk has settled in. The animals have quieted. If you listen close enough, you may hear gentle voices rising through the pines, streaming heavenward in a song so precious we almost don't deserve to hear it." -Jacob Bio: "As a composer and multi-genre musician, saxophonist Jacob Nance (b.1999) aims to use his refined knowledge of the instrument to create genre-blurring art that stimulates intellectual discussion while fostering emotional connection for all audience members. His music strives to share his reflection on the human experience, programming a wide array of works ranging from folk music to the avant-garde in an effort to build community through representation. As a classical saxophonist, Jacob has achieved success through merging his own creative visions with the multitude of aesthetics presented by composers, with successes evident through national and international competitions as well as frequent jazz performances in Oklahoma, Mid-Michigan, and Northern New York. An emerging composer, Jacob searches for truths by merging popular music’s stylings within the realm of art music to transcend any particular genre and instead reach strictly for emotion. His works have been performed at various recitals and festivals across the country. He has been commissioned by many ensembles and individuals, including Joseph Lulloff, Jonathan Nichol, Jeffrey Allardyce, FLYDLPHN, Tyler Young, Clap7 Saxophone Quartet, Simian Duo, Lati2de, and numerous others. Jacob graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Music and Michigan State University with a Masters in Music and Doctorate in Musical Arts. Jacob currently teaches at Saxophone and Jazz at Utah State University. He has served as Visiting Assistant Professor of Saxophone at the Crane School of Music and as Instructor of Saxophone at the Flint Institute of Music in addition to keeping a robust private studio.
